Montessori is a method of education developed in early 20th century Italy by the first female medical graduate from the University of Rome. Dr. Maria Montessori recognized children’s natural desire to learn and their extraordinary ability to absorb particular types of information at specific cognitive stages. She pioneered the multi-level classroom and child-sized environment, for which she designed a carefully structured series of graded materials. Even more important than the Montessori materials, however, is the implementation of the Montessori philosophy, which is based on a genuine respect for each child’s individuality and intrinsic worth. The fine balance Montessori achieved between freedom and structure goes a long way towards explaining the world-wide success of her educational system.
